Diploma Privilege Back in Play in
Connecticut After Chief Justice’s Letter

Chief Justice Richard Robinson to a group
of law school graduates leaves the door
slightly open to diploma privilege, which allows
graduates to become licensed attorneys without
having to sit for the bar exam.
In the July 29 letter to a group called Diploma
Privilege for Connecticut, Robinson said he’d dis-
cussed the issue with Associate Justice Andrew
McDonald, who also chairs the Rules Committee
of the Superior Court in Connecticut.
Robinson also told the group in the letter that
he’d be reaching out to the Connecticut Bar Exam-
ining Committee “to discuss your request.”
While the committee would be the entity to
waive the exam, a decision on allowing diploma
privilege would come from the Rules Committee
of the Superior Court.
